As a Homeowner, How Much Should I Pay Attention to Trends?
We’ve all heard it — keep your home up-to-date, follow the trends, stay current. But here’s the thing: your home isn’t a Pinterest board. It’s where you live, relax, raise your kids, and occasionally eat cold pizza on the couch. So yes, it’s smart to update and maintain your investment — but it should still feel like you.

Take the latest “smart home” craze, for example. I recently read about AI-powered light fixtures that automatically adjust brightness based on natural light and who’s in the room. Cool idea, right? But what if I am the person in the room… and I actually want it dark? Or maybe I’m helping one of my girls make a bead bracelet under the world’s tiniest lighting conditions and need the brightness cranked all the way up. Sometimes, I just want to hit the dimmer myself — no algorithms required.

Much like home aesthetic and staging trends, the implementation and usage of home tech should align with the preferences of the inhabitant(s). In the near future when smart homes will likely dominate the market, perhaps you’ll have no choice but integrate it into your home as well. Of course, you can do that without ever using it. You can do it before you sell. It’s all personal and relative! Don’t be surprised when you go to sell and it’s relayed to you that had your home been equipped with A, B, or C it would’ve commanded a higher asking price. That’s just how the market operates. Also don’t spend every waking moment living for the people who will own your home when you’re no longer living there. It’s a delicate balance, sure, but not an impossible one.

Let’s Talk “Trends You’re Supposed to Ditch”
I keep seeing articles telling homeowners what not to have anymore. So, let’s have a little fun and push back on some of the usual suspects:
Landline Phones- Sure, most people don’t use them anymore. But some families are bringing them back to cut down on screen time and give kids a simpler way to communicate. Retro and intentional? Kinda love that.
DVD Players- Streaming is great… until your favorite movie mysteriously disappears or your Wi-Fi tanks. Having physical copies (especially in 4K) means you can watch The Office for the 47th time even during a blackout.
Framed Photos- Digital frames are fun, but they don’t replace holding a photo in your hand or seeing real memories on your wall. Some moments deserve to be printed.
Books- E-books are fine, but real books add warmth and texture to a space — and they don’t send blue light straight to your brain at bedtime.
Toys- Traditional toys aren’t outdated, they’re development gold. Blocks, dolls, board games… they build creativity and connection in ways no tablet app ever could.

At the end of the day, your home should reflect you. Trends come and go (remember gray everything?), but comfort, functionality, and personality never go out of style.

If you’re thinking about selling soon, sure — it’s smart to research what buyers in your area are loving right now. Make repairs, declutter, and give your home that polished, well-cared-for look. But don’t lose your personal touch in the mean time.
Make sure your home is yours before you hand it off to the next chapter.
